The Statistical Quality Control and Operations Research Unit of Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Coimbatore, as an Institute of National Importance, under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation have been set up as early as 1955 by visionary founder Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis - well known Statistician of the World – spearheading the Economic Planning and Quality Movement in India.
The Unit has been rendering Quality Initiatives Yeomen Services to meet the business requirements of Various industries in Coimbatore and South West Region covering wide range of Software, Textiles, Heavy Engineering, Health Care, Motor Pumpsets, Infrastructure, Textile Processing from MNC’s , Large corporate to SME’s during the last 55 Years.
The Latest techniques on Lean, Good Manufacturing Practices, Quality Management systems and Quality tools and Technology are being taught and Many Entrepreneurs, Technical people, Executives, Research Scholars, and Students were being trained every year in order to achieve the Business Excellence and attain Career Prospects by every individual generating employment opportunities. Suddenly it was decided by the Council of ISI to amalgamate the unit shifting to Newly set up Chennai Centre.
The SQC unit in Coimbatore has rendered services covering 200 Industries, training more than 100 Black Belts in Six Sigma Zero Defect Programmes, 500 workers every year, 20 companies in ISO systems every year various fields including guide lines for Ph.D’s promoting statistical techniques for real time applications. All these activities are the apt needs of today’s Successful Business.
Under the auspices of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore and various other associations it was earlier represented to the Government, and to the Chairman of the Institute Hon’ble Minister Pranabh Kumar Mukherjee that such services cannot be suddenly withdrawn by the Institute in order to develop other Centres and it is against the Principle of Natural Justice.
Following various representations, and the legal interventions taken by the industries in Coimbatore, the Director of the Institute had set up a five Member committee Headed by Dr. Dwijesh Dutta Majumder, to hear the voice of Industries and Academicians in Coimbatore.
In order to pass a few resolutions, a meeting has been organised by our Chamber inviting representatives of various other associations and dignitaries, at 5.30 p.m. on Tuesday the 7th June, 2011 at Chamber Towers, Avinashi Road, Coimbatore.
